Traffic Lights | Drama Game to Regulate Your Class Energy Level

The Traffic Lights drama game is a super simple warm up to try with your class. Included in our Introductory Drama Lesson Plan for 3-6 year olds, it’s safe to play while social distancing and can be played virtually.

COVID-19 Update!
Try to keep your students two metres apart. Perhaps try marking individual lines for the students to walk on instead of allowing them to move freely around the room.

Instructions

  • Have the students walk around the space.
  • Call out the colours of traffic lights and the students should respond appropriately.
  • If you shout ‘red’ they should freeze.
  • When you shout ‘orange’ they should walk slowly.
  • If you shout ‘green’ they should walk quickly.
  • Ask the students to name different kinds of transport eg. Train, aeroplane.
  • Repeat the exercise moving like each of the modes of transport in turn.

Top tip: Continue to utilise this game throughout class to manage energy and regain control. If the students are getting a little rowdy, shouting ‘red’ can give you a minute to explain the next activity while the students are still and quiet.

In my experience

This game can be a very useful tool in the preschool ESL classroom too. When learning the names of different modes of transport, the physical element can help reinforce learning.

In ESL classes I would play the game in the same way but instead of calling red, amber and green, I would say fast, slow and stop.

This helps to cements basic action words in the young learners’ minds.

This activity is part of our ‘A Day at the Zoo’ drama lesson plan for ages 3-6. Available to UK readers and USA readers.
