Teacher Tip – Making the Traffic Light Warning System Unique

This summer, Silly Fish Learning creator, Rebecca Humphries spent some time working for Young Persons Opportunities Project at Speke Community Centre in Liverpool. The Community Centre use a uniquely ‘scouse’ (Liverpudlian) warning system to manage behaviour.

Each child is given three warnings for bad behaviour in the style of traffic lights.

Green: 1st warning.

Amber: let’s ‘av words – a discussion is needed about the child’s behaviour and a second warning is issued.

Red: jog on – The child is asked to leave the community centre for the evening and in extreme cases may be barred for a number of sessions.

This warning system can be adapted to suit a variety of classrooms and can be a used in conjunction with Silly Fish’s strategies to be firm and fair.

The great thing about using traffic lights as a symbol of consequences is that it allows the students to visualise their behaviour. Having a notice board display serves as a constant reminder during class.

Let us know the consequences of your warnings and how this technique worked in your class!
